Each day, I read of rape. Of rape culture. Of who should be to blame, of what should be done to them – and I read of people wondering how this happens. Let me hand you two keys. The first is that many are comfortable generalizing and categorizing people. The second is that most people and every governmentally driven culture I’ve ever come across find it OK to do some things to some people without their consent.
So, change it. Look for the individual in everything, and if you’re considering doing something *to* someone – taking their picture, eating their food, playing tricks on them, having sex with them, converting them to your religion, anything they might say no to – ask if they consent.
Ask if they consent – and if they do not, do not do that thing.
If you wish your kids, your friends, your acquaintances, your government, your surrounding humanity to stop: Do not be the breach. Do not accept it. Where it is safe for you to stand up – or if you’re brave, where it isn’t necessarily safe – say the words. That breach of consent is in no category acceptable, that naming someone a group rather than themselves lies to them, makes them appear other than individual selves – and that that is a breach.
And when someone seeks to breach you: To the best of your ability, without going beyond what you’re willing to risk – stop them if you can - and if you cannot, find those who will help you prevent that thing from happening again.
Rape culture kills choice, is a culture of breach - and we change that death of choice to life by demanding our consent or lack thereof stand, training ourselves, our own, and our surrounding humanity: Do not be the breach.
