Had some questions about the method for building these, so here’s the basic approach.

1) Measure necessary wedge
2) Paint, 11"x17, either to wedge, or to full painting with wedge in mind for afters
3) Scan at 600 DPI
4) Crop wedge - a nine panel mandala uses a 40 degree wedge, an eight panel mandala uses a 45 degree wedge, etc.
5) Lay wedge into square 2.4x its height, point of wedge on center.
6) If wedge is pattern perfect - painted specifically as a repeating pattern, point to center of square
7) If wedge isn’t pattern perfect, bump it out between 1 and 5 percent from center
8) Add layer under wedge, color that wedge to match paper
9) Copy, rotate 40 degrees (nine panel), repeat until all panels are full
10) Clean up if necessary
11) Select circle from corner to corner
12) Within circle, select background color and *save* that selection in the TIFF
13) If part of the painting itself gets selected, recolor background layer to new color, select that color
14) With none of the painting itself now selected, expand selection by 10-15 pixels
15) Content aware fill selection, deliberately allowing errors and irregularities
16) Save
17) Re-fill areas or hand adjust areas for desired degree of irregulairy
18) Add in asymmetric elements, etc
19) OTHER STUFF
20) Save final piece

4-16 can be scripted for every painting source, and it takes bloody forever, but doesn’t require constant hands-on, as 15 and 16

Repeat this for each layer in the mandala. Some of the things I’ve worked on go a dozen or more layers deep, but most are simpler.
