Othering Stroke

they told me to honor my father and mother
but didn’t say by land or blood, by sea or flood
better all these things than that misery
those who’d say my destiny for me
whether writ in ink or gold
whether folded under or foretold
let the pen be mine then, or scold
of that mystery to cry thief
where I am mine to wield of old
where you who’d peel that skin
that I bleed salt, of clay insult
written instead to honor other
