As Well You Know

somewhere, coyote has an itch
maybe under a tree, maybe
over there, under the ducks
pond water hides itches
as well you know
dig long enough, they’ll find it
cure it with another itch
all curious about twitches
strychnine bait by false claim
as well you know
come back out of own shadow
still a-flinching, marking ranch
what’s mine is yours, seven tucks
preserving mantle, this one mallard
as well you know
