Adult Choices

in a soup cup
blazoned with the cartoons of my childhood
clinging to the bottom
is the colorful and heavily sweetened milk
I couldn’t finish
mouth refusing at that traumatized breakfast hour
though I have now eaten
a thing I have long been denied
learning in that act
sugared cereal is not my speed
but adulting is finding out
