Felling Grounds

we are told as children
never say the name of the monster
whether under bed or over sea
lest they notice your naming
and pay attention

but therein fear lays sway
to always hide away, ashamed
instead, perhaps, a naming song
on repeat, on repeat, on repeat
until they crave oblivion
