A Private Burial
April 7, 2023

we write reminders to ourselves to defend
them assailed in disarray, this fine morn
that we become them, someone to defend
in morning, in mourning, in everyday

lest by the blade we permit, we be silenced
lest by the glade in silence we submit
quiet, perchance uttering in our passage
they didn’t need defense, those silenced
