Carrots
November 3, 2023
we find carrots
resting after the first hard frost
an inch deeper than iced earth
in their soft-soiled raised beds
now with shingle slate-frim hat
clever trowel
sliding in along the edges
lifting cap in courteous manner
purple and red roots shaken
dangling as beard below
harvest then
comes as a swift shaking
two-foot plates cut lose
in cheerful steel strokes
carrots into bucket
hat back to bed
now a-wintering
