on one of my birthdays
my folks made me
a chocolate volcano cake
with cherry pie filling

they thought an air compressor
would render the volcano
properly active

they were
Mt. St. Helens
correct about this

ceiling in the kitchen
decades later
still looks

confused
a discolored peacock
taking flight

that
that's why
when I hunger
it is for sky

in my heart
still chocolate
still volcano
